Surry Hills dining institution Longrain to close its doors

Sydney restaurant Longrain will hold its last service at the end of June after almost two decades.

The Surry Hills restaurant paved the way for a modern take on Asian/Thai food delivered in an industrial, communal dining space.

Longrain has since spawned sister restaurants in Melbourne and Tokyo, but owner Sam Christie says he won’t be renewing the lease on the Surry Hills premises.

However, the restaurant’s closure doesn’t mean Sydneysiders will be without, as Christie has stated he is looking for a new site, which will have a smaller footprint.

"Perhaps in the city, maybe Darlinghurst," he said.
