Perth chef jailed for indecent assaults that spanned over a decade

A Perth chef has been jailed for four years after being found guilty of indecently assaulting six young women over the course of 12 years.

Salvatore Otranto preyed upon young women he worked with at his Kalamunda restaurant and other venues, some of whom were as young as 16, over period between 2001 and 2013.

His offences came to light after an incident at a hotel where he had secured the role of head chef after the closure of his business. A young woman contacted police after he had tried to assault her in his hotel room. He was 61 years-old at the time of the incident.

A string of similar assaults were uncovered after previous victims came forward with stories of unwanted touching and sexually motivated acts.

In sentencing Otranto, Judge Felicity Davis said while she accepted his offending was not the most serious of its type, the effect it had of his victims was significant. She also noted he had shown no remorse.

“You’ve shown no insight into what you have done. There is no evidence of rehabilitation,” Judge Davis said.

“At the age of 67, I would not categorise you of being such an advanced age which provides much in the way of mitigation. What your counsel has said to me that your current age, combined with your ill health, does provide something in the way of mitigation.”
