Subiaco Hotel goes on the market for the first time in more than a century

The historic Subiaco Hotel in Perth has been put on the market for the first time in more than a century, with owners Michael and Judy Monaghan looking to retire.

Agents JLL and Richard Noble & Company have been appointed to sell the business and the 122-year-old building, restaurant and neighbouring carpark.

The Monaghans own the business along with the descendants of families who acquired it in the early 1900s, but have decided it’s time to retire after running the historic watering hole for 50 years.

Speaking to The West Australian, the couple said the opening of the Optus Stadium and subsequent loss of football traffic has affected business to some degree.

“Certainly, blind Freddy knows Subiaco has lost its mojo but we believe a resurgence is about to happen,” Judy Monaghan said.

“If we were 40 years old and this resurgence was happening we would want to be part of it. But we’ve done it already. It’s gone from being the corner pub to something that was really the hotspot of Perth.

“There is just this nice feeling of timeliness and satisfaction of a job we’ve done fairly well.”

Most of the hotel building is owned by the descendants of the families who acquired it in the early 1900s from the Stanley Brewery Company, while the Monaghans bought the hospitality business 50 years ago and bought a 27 per cent share of the building in 1990.
