Brompton Hotel shuts its doors after recent sale

An award-winning pub has closed its doors and will now operate only as a venue for special functions.

The closure of the Brompton Hotel in South Australia’s western suburbs took customers by surprise. A note on the pub door stated: “We wish to inform our valuable patrons and friends that the Brompton has recently been sold and will be handed over to new ownership in the coming weeks.

“We thank you for your patronage over the years and are looking forward to seeing what the new owners have in store for this great western suburbs pub.

“As of Monday November 18, the venue will remain operating as a function space for special functions and events until official handover.”

The message also appears on the company website.

“Just rocked up to find you were closed,” a social media user posted.

“Feel sorry for your lovely team of staff.”

The Brompton Hotel underwent a million-dollar revamp in 2022 after the Duxton Pubs Group bought the heritage-listed hotel. The upgrade included a “light and bright” bar, poolroom in place of pokies and a Michelin-trained chef in the kitchen.

Duxton Pubs CEO Mark Condi said of the recent sale, “While the hotel was not on the market, we have accepted an offer and the new owners will take over running the venue next month.

“The Brompton is continuing to operate as a function space for events and is still taking bookings until the official settlement and handover in coming weeks.

“Our employees will continue to work for Duxton Pubs Group at our other venues.

“Duxton Pubs Group is focused on the continued strategic expansion of its portfolio and is unwavering in its goal of being one of Australia’s pre-eminent hospitality groups, and currently has 25 venues in its portfolio.”

The Brompton won Best Australian Restaurant – Metropolitan category at the  Australian Hotels Association Awards last year.
