Man in hospital after hotel robbery

A man has been left with a head injury after a hotel robbery in Wallsend turned violent. NSW Ambulance paramedics treated him before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.

Emergency services were called to an aggravated break-and-enter around 2.30am on Wednesday, January 29.

Police heard that s group of men forced their way into a Wallsend hotel, stealing keys and attempting to take cash.

A 25-year-old man who tried to intervene as they fled in a dark-coloured sedan was assaulted, suffering a head laceration. Police officers arrived at the scene and the man was treated for his injuries. He was later reported to be in a stable condition.

A crime scene was established at the hotel and police conducted a search for clues.

The investigation is ongoing.

Local residents reported police tape at the corner of Nelson and Tyrell Streets, with Tyrell Street closed to traffic on Wednesday morning. The offenders remain at large.
