Police swarm Sydney nightspots

The second in a series of high-profile operations to reduce alcohol-related crime in the Sydney CBD has been deemed a success.

More than 150 police were joined on the weekend by assisting agencies including Fire and Rescue NSW, Office of Liquor Gaming and Racing (OLGR) and Family and Community Services, in a high-visibility crackdown focused on Sydney's entertainment precincts at The Rocks, the George St cinema strip, Oxford St and Kings Cross.

Operation Rushmore II breath-tested more than 2500 people, arrested 33 and charged 23. This followed the first such operation in late September, in which 35 people were arrested and 34 charged.

Between Friday and Sunday morning, officers inspected licenced premises and patrolled surrounding streets and waterways.

"We will continue to run operations in these entertainment areas over the summer period," said Operation Rushmore Commander, Superintendent Sue Waites.

"Members of the public should be able to enjoy a night out without being injured or becoming a victim of crime."

The crackdown was welcomed by Doug Brand, CEO of Kings Cross Liquor Accord, who told TheShout: "There was a massive police presence in Kings Cross over the weekend, and we have said all along the area needs high-visibility policing."

"It has obviously had a very positive effect, and linked with new transport options, we are seeing much-improved results for late-night patrons.

"We endorse the continuation of a high-visibility police presence at all times, which will go a long way to reducing alcohol-related violence," Brand said.
