Work begins on long-awaited Top End abattoir

Construction has started on what will be northern Australia's largest abattoir, 50 kilometres south of Darwin.

The $85 million meat processing plant is being built by the Australian Agricultural Company (AACo) at Livingstone.

AACo northern beef general manager Stuart Cruden says civil works are under way and he hopes building will start in February.

"They will then can start the drainage and the concrete work, and the steel work and the panel work etcetera," he said.

Mr Cruden says he hopes the abattoir will be in action by late September.
