Strict rules for new Derby short-stay hostel

Housing Minister Terry Redman says a 54-bed, short-stay facility in Derby will help alleviate pressure on existing accommodation services.

Mr Redman has toured the proposed site of the facility with Derby West Kimberley Shire president Elsia Archer.

About $16 million has been allocated to the project, some of which was transferred from the Shire of Broome which failed to secure a location in time to utilise the funding.

Mr Redman says there are up to 150 people who need itinerant services in Derby and paying customers will be able to use the new hostel.

"The problems quite big, I'm told, anywhere from 100-150 visitors at any one time - that's likely to treble during the wet season as I understand it," he said.

"So the pressure on that short-stay accommodation is high."

He says those filling the beds will be charged per night and will have to comply with strict rules.

"Bear in mind that this is also a facility that will have a level of wraparound services," he said.

"There won't be any drinking, there won't be any drugs, there will be a certain code of behaviour ... it will be safe, quality accommodation for those that are in Derby on a short-stay basis."
