Aldi recalls spinach dip over listeria fears

Aldi supermarkets in Victoria, New South Wales, the ACT and Queensland have recalled a spinach dip sold under its Deli Originals brand following the discovery of a listeria contamination.

Tubs of Deli Originals Spinach Dip Mediterranean Style (200g) marked with a use-by date of January 22, 2014, have been recalled due to the discovery of listeria monocytogenes.

The Deli Originals line is made for Aldi stores by Victorian company Yumis Quality Foods and the recall only affects the spinach dip.

A spokeswoman for Aldi said the contamination had been detected during regular testing carried out for the company by an independent laboratory and reported to Food Standards Australia New Zealand on Sunday.

Listeria can cause illness in pregnant women and their unborn babies, the elderly and other people with low immune systems. Symptoms can include fever, headache, tiredness, aches and pains.

FSANZ has advised consumers to return affected tubs of the dip to ALDI and seek medical advice if they are concerned.
