A hotel stay in Sydney to see the famous fireworks will cost an average $600 a night this year
SYDNEY is the third most expensive world city to spend New Year's Eve, with London and Paris more affordable options to ring in 2014.
And it's dearer to spend the night on the Gold Coast than in Tokyo or Rome.
But maybe the biggest surprise is Hobart's sudden popularity as the place to be this New Year's Eve - recording startling price increases for the night to become more costly than Melbourne, Brisbane or Adelaide.
Visitors to the Harbour City are shelling out an average of almost $600 a night to see in 2014 - $200 more than last New Year's Eve - and up 164 per cent on average prices for the month of December.
Only Rio de Janeiro ($791) and New York ($770) are dearer than Sydney, according to a hotel price comparison of world cities by accommodation search site trivago.
And at $401 a night, the Gold Coast sits behind London ($543) and Paris ($434) on the list.
A hotel stay in the Tassie capital on December 31 averages $248 a night - up from $202 last year and 35 per cent more than the average December price.

But in other parts of Australia, the cost of New Year's accommodation has dropped this year, with Melbourne down 8 per cent from last year to $230, Brisbane down 17 per cent to $189 and Adelaide down 18 per cent to $158.
