AN AUSTRALIAN hotel chain has come up with the best way to deal with light-fingered guests.

The quirky QT hotel group, has listed their most coveted items on a menu, subtly placed it on the desk in each of their 200 suites and aptly named it DESIRE.

The 14 items and the prices provided would add up to $559 if you opted for all of them so if you even thought about knocking any of them off, your ‘purchases’ will, eventually, appear on your bill.

But these aren’t any run-of the-mill hotel goodies.

Let’s face it, shower caps, bubble bath, sewing kits, shampoo and disposable slippers are considered fair game when it comes to an overnight stay and hotels usually expect their guests to be a little light-fingered when it comes to those.

At the QT Sydney — where the rack rate starts at $380 per night — we’re talking ceramic animals, an arty hand mirror, a cocktail shaker, coffee mugs, shoe horns, coat hangers, eye masks, a tray and even bathroom glasses.

As far as QT execs are concerned, their “Desire’ list is “increasingly becoming more and more popular as it is not a normal hotel offering,’’ says QT Hotels marketing and communications man, Stephen Howard.

QT Sydney: decor that is eclectic, cool & covetable

For years there have been stories floating around in travel land about guests ‘taking’ entire contents of hotel room, minus the bed (just) while The Best Western chain in the US even reported fixtures like linen, light bulbs and furnishings are often swiped.

Some more, umm, unusual items that have been swiped from international hotels include a suit of armour, a two-piece leather lounge suite, a Christmas tree and a model of a Concorde. Even hairdryers, kettles, crockery and hotels gardens have also been a source of stealing. A plant cutting from Paris anyone?

As far as other example of hotel light-fingered looting goes these are some other great examples from hotel around the world.

Like the time three overall-clad customers strolled into a Starwood Hotel in the US and decided that stealing the mini-soaps wasn’t enough, instead opting for the lobby’s Grand Piano.

Meanwhile, a TraveLodge survey noted that some guests take a liking to their curtains, mirrors, light fittings and carpets while a Las Vegas hotel owner has reported that one guest had cut away the carpets in their entire room.

Hotel room numbers, small TVs, chandeliers and artworks are also intended stay-verniers for some hotel guests but my fave? The one about an entire minibar which went missing from the Parkroyal in Kuala Lumpur.

Why anyone paying from $300 a night to stay at a 5 star hotel would want a coffee cup is anyone’s guess but hey, some travelling peeps will steal just about anything if it isn’t nailed down.

What is the kookiest thing you have, umm, ‘light-finger Louis-ed’ from a hotel?
