Newtown Hotel is the first pub in NSW to get a tank full of fresh and unpasteurised Carlton Draught beer.

The beer has been delivered directly from the Carlton & United Brewery in Melbourne, in special chilled delivery tankers designed to be enjoyed within 14 days of brewing.

The other iconic Sydney pub to experience the beer fresh and unpasteurised is the Royal Oak in Double Bay.

Carlton & United Breweries marketing manager Michael McKeown said Aussies have been coming together over a fresh glass of Carlton Draught for 150 years and this was another way to appreciate the quality.

“We took the fresh Carlton Draught from a bright beer tank at the brewery, took it up the Hume Highway and straight into the specially designed copper tanks in each venue,” Mr McKeown said.

“It’s the freshest draught beer drinking experience in Sydney,” he said.

Another innovation of the craft-beer revolution, the idea is to offer beer which is unpasteurised, unfiltered and has continued to mature until the moment it is poured into a schooner and you are sipping on it.

The regular process of pasteurisation removes any bacteria and live yeast from beer by flash-boiling it.

This ensures the flavour is not damaged by bacteria in the long term, but in the short-term the unpasteurised beer should taste fresher.

Newtown Hotel general manager Narissa Matthews described the Newtown hotel customers as being passionate about their beer.

“So being able to offer them something different like this is unreal. It gives our loyal customers something we know they want — the freshest possible beer,” Ms Matthews said.

A pair of our journalists — Rohan Smith and Sean Thompson — took one for the team to sample the newest offering.

“It’s a lot creamier and it has none of that metallic taste you might associate with beer that’s been sitting in batts or kegs for a long time,” Rohan said.

“It definitely had the signature Carlton Draught taste, but the fresh factor was amped up significantly,” Sean said.

“Unlike regular beer taps that blast out the beer, the traditional bronze ones delivered the beer slowly and smoothly, leaving just the right amount of head. Because it had only been delivered recently, the smell and flavours were enhanced.”

Carlton Draught fresh and unpasteurised will be available in more venues across Australia over the next 12 months.
