The owners of Sydney pub Cat and Fiddle, Irish couple Fergie and Delia Doyle, are today celebrating Melbourne Cup success as part-owners of the winning horse, Protectionist.

“It’s a fantastic thing for us,” said Fergie, speaking to the Irish Echo.

“This time last year, I was on the operating table and a year before that our best mare Rose Of Peace broke her leg.”

Trained by Andreas Wohler,  Protectionist paid $8.20 for the Win on the NSW totalizator and $8.60 for the Win on SuperTAB and started at $8.50 with TAB Fixed Odds.

TAB reports $132 million wagered on Cup day

Almost $132 million was wagered on yesterday’s 10-race Melbourne Cup meeting at Flemington across the NSW and Victorian TABs, according to Tabcorp.

“TAB is pleased to have facilitated another outstanding Melbourne Cup day across our multi-channel network,” said Tabcorp managing director and CEO David Attenborough.

“TAB customers today placed their Melbourne Cup bets across almost 3,000 TAB outlets in NSW, the ACT and Victoria, as well as via tab.com.au, the TAB app and our call centre. On-course betting was also a big part of the day, especially at Flemington where 600 operators were taking bets.

“At peak, our systems were processing a record 3019 transactions per second.”
