Australian restaurants have some of the best wine lists in the world

Australian restaurants are second only to the US when it comes to great wine lists, according to the UK-based magazine The World of Fine Wine and their annual “World’s Best Wine Lists” awards.

A panel of top wine critics and masters of wine reviewed more than 4000 wine lists from around the world, giving 249 Australia restaurants, including 68 in Sydney and 29 in Melbourne, a one, two or three-star ranking. Just 896 restaurant globally were awarded stars, with the US topping the rankings with 312 restaurants.

A one-star rating is a “good wine list”, two stars is a “very good wine list” and three, a “great wine list” based on its breadth, depth, interest, quality, value, organisation and accuracy.

Melbourne’s Vue de Monde atop the Rialto Tower is among those given three stars.

Head Sommelier Matthew Lamb said it was a huge honour to receive such recognition from global wine authorities.

“We put a huge amount of work and effort into the wine list and program, and such acknowledgement makes those 2am nights of adding wines to the list all the more worthwhile,” he said.

New York’s Eleven Madison Park was given the accolade of the world’s best wine list, taking over from 2014 winner Palais Coburg Residenz in Austria.

All up, 40 of the 300 restaurants were given three stars came from Australia. They’re listed below and if you want the full list of winners, it’s here.
