Fire crews were called to reports of a fire at the Country Club Hotel in Dalby at about 2am this morning.
Crews arrived to find flames visible in the upper storey of the pub on the corner of Cunningham and Drayton Sts.
Dalby fire captain Ian Tuppack said the fire "had the potential to go right through the building".
"The fire was started in the residential area upstairs. Prompt action saved the building," he said.
Capt Tuppack said when the fire crew arrived flames were coming out of the Drayton St side of the Country Club Hotel.
"The occupants were woken by the smoke alarms… working smoke alarms always save lives," he said.
Dalby police Sergeant Matt Carmody said a passing motorist alerted police to the nearby fire.
He praised the work of the fire crews in getting the blaze under control quickly.
Fortunately, the fire was contained to the ceiling and no injuries were reported at the scene.
The Fire Investigation Branch will attend the hotel today to ascertain the cause of the fire.
