Como will manage the six-star hotel, due to open in September, which is a key part of the $580 million overhaul of the heritage Cathedral- Treasury precinct and will be named Como The Treasury.

Como is owned by hospitality and retail billionaire Christina Ong, known in some circles as the queen of Bond Street, and her husband Ong Beng Seng.

The deal is a departure from FJM Property’s plans to run the hotel as an independent operation. Hong Kong-based Aman Resorts was previously attached to the project before the company was put up for sale.

FJM director Adrian Fini confirmed details of the Como deal toThe West Australian yesterday.

“We had long planned to run the hotel as an independent,” Mr Fini said. “However, when we met with Como and realised how similar our vision and values were, it was a straightforward decision.

“Como has a history of hand-picking special properties around the globe based on their heritage and unique features.

“We are delighted that Mr and Mrs Ong chose this very special property as their inaugural Australian hotel.”

Como Hotels and Resorts chief operating officer Hans Joerg Meir said the group was delighted to bring its brands of “wellness, service and cuisine” to Australia.

“These hallmarks, combined with the meticulous restoration and contemporary design by (architect) Kerry Hill, will quickly establish Como The Treasury as a leading luxury hotel of international standards in Australia and the world,” Mr Meir said.

Como’s arms include Como Shambhala, which provides spa services for the group’s hotels and resorts. Como The Treasury will include a heated pool, gym and spa.
