Lakeside marina clears first hurdle, as developer waits on apartment approvals

The first stage of a luxury marina and residential project at Lake Macquarie has been approved by a planning panel.

The $388 million Trinity Point development has faced criticism from locals who are concerned about the impact it will have on the area.

But the Hunter's Joint Regional Planning Panel yesterday approved stage one of the project that will see 94 berths, a building, carpark and landscaping get underway.

The Johnson Property Group's Keith Johnson said it is great news.

"There's employment, it's good for tourists, it's good for that end of Lake Macquarie," he said.

"There's just nothing down there for the community, and it's a once in a lifetime opportunity to do something right."

The plans have been in the pipeline for 16 years, but ha faced stiff opposition from some locals concerned about its size and position.

Mr Johnson said he is hoping the rest of the project will be given the green light soon.

He said work will get started later this year.

"The concept plan for the 250 apartments, function centre, hotel, restaurants, is with the state government now," he said.

"We're expecting that to go to the panel in the next few weeks."
