Coluzzi, who died late last year, was known as the “boxing barista”.

The Sydney identity was the founding owner of the legendary Kings Cross cafe, Bar Coluzzi.

“My best friend Luigi and I shared three great passions; boxing, Italian song and food and that’s why we had this amazing chemistry that defied our eras and why we had so much fun together,” Ferretti said.

“He would have really loved Caracalla and I dedicate the project to him. I will also be showing all major fights on our large screen here in his honour.”

Ferretti has gone full circle only to return to where it all began, the inner west.

Before he headed off to Italy in 2012, he made his mark at Five Dock with his two restaurants, Caffe Canneto and Milano Bar.

Ferretti has fitted out his new restaurant in true Roman style. The moment you step foot inside the pizzeria, the heat of the woodfired oven gives you a warm welcome.

The friendly Italian staff will escort you to your seat and more so than often you will be greeted by Mr Coluzzi’s brother, Mario.

The restaurant has a great energy which is always alive and buzzing.

The menu is like an old Roman trattoria with a modern twist. It features more than 20 pizzas, including his signature margherita pizza ($14).

Other classic Roman dishes on the menu include the four-hour wood-fired Roman-style pork belly with spicy chicory and rosemary potatoes ($26), pappadelle duck porcini ($28) with tomato and cream and the grain-fed beef tagliata ($36).

The dishes take you on a journey through Ferretti’s home town of Rome, where his grandmother was also a chef.

He also happens to be a classically trained opera singer so it was only fitting he named his pizzeria Caracalla, known as the greatest open-air opera venue in Rome.
