Cairns for Ravenshoe team raise more than $20,000 for family of cafe explosion victim, Nicole Dempsey

THE close friend of a victim of the Ravenshoe cafe explosion tragedy has held a massive fundraiser for her family.

Nicole Dempsey passed away from injuries she sustained when, on June 9, a car crashed into gas cylinders next to the cafe where she was working, causing an explosion that injured 20 people and killed two, including Mrs Dempsey.

Along with two friends, Kym Mcphee-Smith organised a Monster Raffle Draw with more than $10,000 worth of prizes up for grabs and was drawn at the Pier Bar yesterday.

“We’re hoping to raise between $25,000 to $30,000,” she said. “Justin (one of the organisers) called me to do the Monster Raffle and I thought it could give me purpose.

“Hopefully it will relieve a bit of pressure for the Nihall/Dempsey family.”

Some of the prizes included a $500 Jetstar voucher, a $900 trail bike and vouchers for local restaurants and bars.

For those who missed out on yesterday’s raffle they can still bid for auction items on the Cairns Supports Ravenshoe website, with items including season tickets to the Cairns Taipans and a signed Melbourne Storm jersey.

To bid on the auction items, head to: www.cairnssupportsravenshoe.com.au
