Plympton’s Once & Again Book Cafe embraces Suspended Coffee concept

SIMPLE acts of kindness are being revived by a Plympton cafe in the hope of brightening a stranger’s day.

Once & Again Book Cafe, which opened on Marion Rd last month, allows customers to purchase a coffee or meal in advance — either for a friend, someone in need or a deserving person chosen by the cafe workers.

Customers must present a flyer, which is given to them by the buyer, to claim the advanced purchase at a later date.

Any money remaining from unclaimed food and drink at the end of August will be donated to the Hutt St Centre.

Cafe owner Judy Forbes says it is part of the worldwide initiative Suspended Coffee, which encourages people to share goodwill and compassion through a simple gesture.

“(It’s about) fostering kindness and a bit of a pay it forward campaign,” Ms Forbes says.

“There are all sorts of reasons to be kind to people.

“Customers can come in and feel this sense of ‘wow, someone’s thought of me’.

“It helps (the buyers) feel good about themselves as well.”

She says one customer was so keen he offered to pay it forward before the initiative started last Friday.

“I’m going to continue the program for as long as it works,” Ms Forbes says.

“Next month we’ll either have another organisation or (continue donating) with the Hutt Street Centre.”

Ms Forbes says she chose the Hutt St Centre in the lead-up to participating in its annual fundraising campaign, Walk A Mile In My Boots, which happened last week.
