Dan Hunter from Brae in Birregurra named Australia’s best chef

Dan Hunter from Brae in Birregurra has been crowned Australia’s best chef at the prestigious Gourmet Traveller Awards.

The lauded chef took out the top spot in the peer-voted chef of the year award.

The accolade comes on the back of Hunter’s country Victorian restaurant making its debut on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants’ top 100 list earlier this year, ranked 87 in the world.

Neil Perry’s Rockpool in Sydney was named Australia’s restaurant of the year, knocking Ben Shewry’s Attica off the top spot to number 2.

Vanessa Crichton of Rosetta at Crown was crowned the best maitre’d in the country, while Raffaele Mastrovincenzo from Kappo in Melbourne’s CBD is Australia’s best sommelier.

The new restaurant of the year award went to Bennelong at the Sydney Opera House.

Lennox Hastie, a chef who cooks only with fire at his Sydney restaurant Firedoor, was named best new talent, and Kylie Kwong’s Billy Kwong won wine list of the year.

Australia’s bar of the year is Brisbane favourite The Gresham, while Regional Restaurant of the Year is ambitious Byron Bay newcomer Three Blue Ducks.

Victoria has four restaurants in the top 10: Attica (2), Brae (3), Vue de Monde (5), and Cutler & Co (9).
