Pilu Restaurant picks up top gong in Hot 50 Restaurant awards

Foodies take note. When it comes to restaurants, Australia’s hottest classic is located in Freshwater.

The Weekend Australian Magazine gave Pilu at Freshwater top honours in its Hot 50 Restaurants listing on the weekend.

The award hails the restaurant’s cutting edge chef, Sardinian food, the owners’ experience and the beachfront setting.

Restaurateur Giovanni Pilu originally made a name for himself in the late ‘90s in a tiny Sardinian eatery, Cala Luna at The Spit.

Pilu at Freshwater opened in 2004. Hottest classic reflects more than a decade of hard work, Mr Pilu said.

“The award reflects where we are and what we do,” he said.

“We have spent 11 years creating an experience with great food, produce and fantastic service so that people will keep coming back.”

Innovative culinary experiences are popular with Sydney diners, Mr Pilu said.

Next week the restaurant’s talented head chef Matteo Zamboni teams up with three rising stars to put on a four-course degustation dinner.

Mr Zamboni’s dessert will feature an onion crumble flavoured with balsamic, marscapone and rhubarb.

“It sounds weird but the ingredients work so well together, I have been playing around with ideas,” he said.

“Putting on special dinners give me an opportunity to be creative.”

ACME’s Mitch Orr, LuMi Dining’s Federico Zanellato and Ormeggio’s Victor Moya will also cook at the final Young Guns dinner.

It has been a big week for ACME. The restaurant won Time Out’s Restaurant of the Year and head chef and co owner Mitch Orr picked up runner-up in the Chef of the Year.

The Young Guns degustation dinner on September has sold out.
