Glad Berry wins Casa Dolce Cafe Bakery’s AFL tipping competition, shouts patrons coffee with prize money

AGE has not held back this top-tipping, footy fanatic.

Even though she is nearing 90 (she’s actually 88 and three-quarters, she says), Glad Berry is a game-day genius.

She beat 110 other tipsters — mainly young people — in the Casa Dolce Cafe Bakery AFL tipping competition, taking home $1600, as well as a satisfied smile.

Forever a fan of Essendon Football Club, the sprightly, talkative Beaumaris local said she loved the sport, loved the cafe and loved winning.

Ms Berry shouted everyone in the cafe a coffee when she got her prize money too.

“I know all about football, and my sons helped me as well,” Ms Berry said.

“I had a good feel about this year, although it was tight right up until the end.

“I think I won because I tipped against Essendon, they were a bit down this year and I knew they would struggle.”

Casa Dolce owner Kaan Omerogullari said Ms Berry was a delight, a true community-minded character who had her own favourite table.

“She is pretty competitive, she loves her sport, she finished in the top 10 last year too,” Mr Omerogullari said.

“For us it was great we had such a wonderful winner, she knows everybody, everybody knows her and we appreciate having her as one of our best customers.”

Ms Berry said community was all about great people, and everyone at the cafe were excellent examples of what makes suburbs like Beaumaris tick.

“I come to the cafe almost every day. It is run by such a wonderful family, and they are so supportive of locals.”
