Direct-fired convection systems pass the air over a burner that heats the air and discharges it into the space. Indirect-fired systems use a heat exchanger to heat the air. Convective systems utilise roof-mounted fan forced heat exchangers that are supplied with steam or very hot water. Radiant heating systems rely on infrared radiation to heat objects, people and surfaces. 

Radiant units are good for open areas with high ceilings and in locations where spot heating is required.
