Two-hatted Tetsuya’s to close its Kent St doors

A Sydney fine dine establishment will close its doors after 22 years in service.

However, it isn’t the end for the two-hatted Tetsuya's.

The highly acclaimed restaurant will be moving from its Kent Street home in the CBD as the building becomes a redevelopment site.

Restaurant owner Tetsuya Wakuda – who is a part owner of the site – and other private joint owners reportedly made $53 million from the sale of the Kent St building when it sold in 2018.

Tetsuya was first opened in 1989 in Rozelle before moving to the Kent St location in November 2000.

During that time, the restaurant gained a reputation as being one of the best in the world and turned the chef into one of the best regarded restaurateurs globally.

Food critic Leo Schofield once said of Wakuda's skilful cooking that it was "as good tasting as you'll find in any of the city's best BYOs, with the exception of Claude's".

While Tetsuya wasn’t as successful in London, he did make a prominent push into Singapore with Waku Ghin and the recently opened spin-off Wakuda eatery.

He has also moved into the Las Vegas food scene.

The Kent St venue will close in August 2023 and while speculation suggested the restaurant would move back to the site once redevelopment is complete, it is more likely a new site will be found.
