Pub brawlers in Kalgoorlie on police radar

A recent spate of pub brawls has led Kalgoorlie police to crack down on fighting in and near local pubs.

Police will use CCTV to find anyone involved in the brawls and will issue barring notices.

Hannan St has become a hot spot for fighting, with 10 infringement notices totalling $5000 after one recent brawl already issued.

Infringements include disorderly behaviour in public and re-entering the venue after being told to move on.

If a fight begins outside a pub or licenced area, police cannot by law issue barring notices, however they can issue infringements and move-on notices.

“The idea is we use CCTV to identify who they are. And if we identify who they are, we can go back and issue infringement notices for fighting,” Officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt Neville Beard told the Kalgoorlie Miner said.

“It’s really about setting standards. If you’re going to come and fight in the street, we’re going to identify who you are using CCTV and you’re going to cop an infringement notice.

“People (need) to know that if they’re going to get involved in these fights when they’re drinking, they can expect us to come along and issue them an infringement notice.”

Sen. Sgt Beard praised the consistency of security at local watering holes.

“With our roster, we’ve got more teams on at the same time so we can provide more police officers to go to these fights and break them up pretty quickly,” he said.
