Sydney's Best Fish & Chips

Sydney's got a big chip on its shoulder... and it's fried to perfection

The Fish Shop

The Fish Shop

Potts Point

The menu is kind of a mix between chip shop classics (deep-fried dim sims, say, or fluffy potato scallops) stepped up very quickly with the likes of blue eye fish fingers – big tender flakes of meaty white fish crumbed-and-deep-fried, strands of fried cuttlefish with garlic, chilli and parsley, and some expertly cooked fish such as the hapuka fillet, cooked in paper and served with slivers of preserved lemon. Head inside for takeaway – they don't take phone orders – and stroll down to the water's edge at Woolloomooloo Bay to dine al fresco.

Fish on Fire

Fish on Fire

Glebe

They do a great beer battered chip, the fish is great and it's exceptional value. You can grab a burger for not much more than pocket change, or a lovely piece of grilled fish with salad for a healthier option. It's more of a takeaway hole and Blackwattle Bay is only a short stroll down the hill, but there are a couple of tables outside if you're inclined to eat in.

Dishes like the most delicate Bass groper – just set with bright greens or spanner crab with buttery tagliatelle with the finest dice of tomato – are evidence of Steve Hodges' cooking prowess. There’s sushi too, raw scallops sliced thin as a whisper or if you’re very lucky, chu toro – belly of bluefin tuna. He also does fish and chips with fillets of flathead. Score a seat outside and you’ll be a happy camper.

Flying Fish and Chips

Flying Fish, Pyrmont Sydney

Pyrmont

Flying Fish and Chips is chef/restaurateur Peter Kuruvita’s take-away outlet dishing up a big piece of battered, flaky white-fleshed fish with a big pile of crisp, hand-cut chips, a couple of wedges of lemon, tomato sauce and tartare sauce. Trust us: it's the fish and chips you remember loving as a kid but haven't been able to find anywhere since. Grab a serve and mosey out of the casino to sit on the docks of Pyrmont Bay.

Bottom of the Harbour

Bottom of the Harbour

Mosman

Not your average fish fry – you'll find oysters fresh from the fish market, a great selection of fine fish and their well known Balmoral Benedict, feta and zucchini fritters and a vegetarian breakfast. This place gets seriously busy on weekends with families flocking to paddle in the netted beach and then scarf down fried treats.

Coogee

You get to select your own piece of fish at this more up-scale fish and chipper. Choose your fish, choose the way you'd like it cooked (grilled/fried), then choose your sides (salad, veg, chips). You can eat in, or better yet, walk the half a block and get sandy down at the beach.

FishMongers

FishMongers

Bondi

These guys have the crispest, plumpest hand-cut chips in Bondi and the fish selection's marked up on the blackboard change depending on whatever’s available. Order the grilled fish and a side of chips and take them down to the beach for a picnic.
