Iconic Sydney restaurant closes its CBD doors

Harry’s Singapore Chilli Crab will close its CBD doors and reopen in Potts Point.

The iconic Sydney eatery reopened at its Elizabeth St location eight years ago, having first opened in Eastlakes in 1982, before moving to Surry Hills and then the CBD in 2014.

The owners decided not to renew the lease, but are looking forward to serving customers at its new location in a matter of weeks.

The restaurant was founded by Harry Lau, who served up his signature Singaporean-style dishes for decades until his death in 2020.

Son-in-law Andy Zhan took over the business and continues the spicy dish tradition.

The restaurant will shut up shop in Elizabeth St on 11 June.

In a statement, the restaurant noted its fond memories of the venue but said, “Potts Point (is) a suburb full of Sydney’s best restaurants.

“We can’t wait to see you there!”

Zhan told The Daily Telegraph, “Of course I’m going to miss the place, but things have to move on and keep going.

“We’ve been around for 43 years and our plan is to be around for 100 years.

“That is our target.”

Zhan said he built the city venue from scratch.

Diners can found the new location on Macleay St next door to Cho Cho San.

The new venue will concentrate on more on its signature dishes.
