High profile restaurateur banned by ASIC

High-profile restaurateur Edoardo Perlo has been banned from managing companies due to his involvement in several collapsed Sydney hospitality businesses.

Corporate watchdog ASIC will disqualify Perlo for four years due to his links to failed venues Popina Kitchen, formerly trading as Salt Meats Cheese Circular Quay, Gasa Gusto and SMC Drummoyne.

Perlo was the director of and Popina Kitchen between 2015 and 2020. Popina opened in 2016 as a place where Italian wood-fired pizzas, cakes and pasta were offered on a menu with Middle Eastern kofta, falafel and shakshuka.

ASIC expressed its concerns that Perlo had traded Popina Kitchen and SMC Drummoyne while insolvent, failed to lodge documents with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and failed to keep proper business records.

ASIC claims the venues owed a total of $2.8 million, including $1.3 million to the ATO and $162,000 for workers’ compensation insurance and payroll tax.

Perlo has been disqualified until June 2027.
