Ayers Rock Resort causes cashless outrage

Tourists are rebelling against Ayers Rock Resort accommodation and retail outlets, which have introduced a cashless policy.

The policy by Ayers Rock Resort was brought in a year ago, but tourists are now saying they will give the venue a miss.

Popular Facebook Group ‘Everything Caravan and Camping’ garnered over 1500 reactions and 1300 comments in a day when Nicole Birrell posted that Ayers Rock resort had become a “completely cashless society”.

“For those of you who like to support remote areas by paying in cash … there are absolutely no facilities here that offer cash as a payment,” she said.

Many commenters said they would now avoid the area.

“Wow – will give this a big miss then unfortunately, cash is king!” one poster said.

“That’s very sad, I won’t stay anywhere that doesn’t accept cash,” another commented.

“I still am a firm believer in cash, we should not be forced to be cashless,” Rob Wood commented.

Resort owner Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia said in a statement the policy had been in place at its venues since 2022 for the safety of patrons.

“In response to changing habits during the pandemic and our commitment to the health and safety of our guests, staff and community members, the hotel and retail outlets at Ayers Rock Resort became cashless in 2022,” a spokeswoman said.

“This is communicated to guests prior to their arrival.

“We continue to offer cash payment options at the onsite IGA supermarket and Shell service station.

“In addition, an ATM is located within the resort.”
