Ex-Bendigo Advertiser site sold

The former home of Bendigo's daily newspaper has been sold and plans to turn the site into a hotel have re-emerged.

Bendigo council confirmed the sale late last night but a price has not been revealed.

The buyers are said to be local developers who want to turn the former Bendigo Advertiser building on Pall Mall into a five-star boutique hotel.

Council says the hotel would feature a restaurant, function centre and 60 suites.

The proposal appears similar to one that emerged in 2008 but fell over when the global financial crisis took hold.

Council says the sale will not affect plans for the old Advertiser building to be the Bendigo Library's temporary home until the end of next year.

It is thought the hotel's first stage will open in mid-2014.
