Pub CCTV footage of alleged thieves sparks outcry

A pub's decision to publish security camera footage of alleged thieves has led to a call for an overhaul of privacy laws.

Sydney's Annandale Hotel has posted CCTV footage of a young man and woman, apparently helping themselves to liquor and food after an alleged break-in.

President of the Council for Civil Liberties, Cameron Murphy, says the pub's bid to identify the pair and help police could backfire because the laws around CCTV footage are not clear.

"What we really need are proper privacy laws where we know what the boundaries are and we know what people's rights are, we also know what their responsibilities are," he said.

"At the moment though the law's had a lot of trouble catching up with technology."
