Capilano urged to extend honey factory reopening

The Central Goldfields Shire is working on getting Capilano to keep its Maryborough honey factory open.

The site had been closed for a year but was recently reopened after a fire damaged Capilano's Brisbane plant.

Shire chief executive Mark Johnston says the factory in Maryborough reopened on a temporary basis but he is hopeful it will stay open in the long-term.

"Look, I think the intention from the Capilano end is probably around six months but of course they need to sort out some issues at the Brisbane end of the world but six months of course we hope extends a little bit longer and in that time we'll be talking to them about activities that may, as I say, give it a permanent base," he said.

"Well I think at this stage it is part of the contingency, they're using it for that purpose but you know six months becomes 12 months, [it] can be a longer term thing ... these things have a way of developing into other areas, so we're hopeful we can talk to them about that."
