Tasmanian mussels: product recall

The NSW Food Authority advises:

Spring Bay Seafoods Pty Ltd has recalled batches of live blue mussels and Coles cooked Tasmanian mussels sold in Coles, and other retails outlets in NSW VIC, QLD, TAS, SA and ACT.

The products are being recalled due to the presence of a paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) - a naturally occurring biotoxin.

Symptoms of paralytic shellfish poisoning generally appear 10 to 30 minutes after ingestion and may include nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and tingling or burning mouth and extremities. Children and people with weakened immune systems may be more susceptible to the toxin’s effects.

The recalled batches are:

  • Spring Valley Live Blue Mussels 500g and 1 kg vacuum sealed plastic packed with ‘use-by’ date between 31 October 2012 to 10 November 2012
  • Spring Valley Live Blue Mussels 1 kg and 2kg net packed with ‘use-by’ date between 29 October 2012 to 06 November 2012
  • Spring Valley Live Blue Mussels 10 kg and 15kg bulk packed to be sold loose in polystyrene box with ‘packed on’ dates between 22 October 2012 to 31 October 2012
  • Coles Cooked Tasmanian Mussels with cream white wine 500g vacuum bag packed in cardboard display carton with ‘use-by’ date 12 November 2012

The recall only applies to the above batches.

Consumers should not eat this product and they should either dispose of any remaining product or return packets to the place for purchase for a full refund.

If you think you or your family might have become ill from eating affected mussels, you should consult your doctor.
