New degree available for tourism and hospitality staff
Australia’s tourism and hospitality sector will require an additional 123,000 workers by 2020 to meet the needs of the growing industry, according to the 2015 Australian Tourism Labour Force Report.
In addition, it found that Australia is undergoing its most rapid period of hotel development, with over 70 hotels and some 10,000 rooms under construction or in advanced stages of planning.
William Angliss Institute has launched its new Bachelor of Resort and Hotel Management, a specialist qualification for people keen to accelerate their careers in this fast-growing industry.
Commencing in July 2016, the new course takes three years of full-time study and is designed to equip graduates with the ability to lead and manage business operations and find innovative solutions to complex issues in the dynamic hotel and resort industries.
The degree course was developed in close consultation with industry and with a view to providing graduates with a strong foundation for a long-term career in the field.
The degree program also complements the new Angliss International Hotel School (AIHS) which offers a Diploma of Hospitality over 12 months, featuring an internship with a major hotel, international study tour and access to specialist master classes in premium service delivery.
After completing the Diploma, students will qualify for guaranteed entry into the second year of William Angliss Institute Bachelor Degree programs, including the Bachelor of Resort and Hotel Management.
Associate Director Higher Education and Quality Dr Paul A. Whitelaw said this degree is an excellent way to gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills to go into this industry.
“This degree offers hands on exposure to current industry programs and simulation software combined with strong industry engagement through expert guest speakers, site inspections and excursions and experienced teaching teams,” Dr Whitelaw said.
The first year of study for the Bachelor of Resort and Hotel Management focuses on the operations of hotels and resorts, while second year gives students management skills to effectively run a property with the third year challenging students to lead innovation in the industry.
Students can then choose to do a fourth year with either a ‘professional practice’ year – one year work placement in an area of their choice – or ‘ international practice’ with one semester of specialist subjects followed by international study or work placement.
The focus is on delivering a combination of academic knowledge and practical skills to help students develop critical thinking, management capabilities, and professional skills so they can enter the industry with confidence.
